In my last blog I talked about the value of letting go and not being such a control freak, but I have to admit, I do love a good, detailed graphite drawing.
I was poking around in Russell’s Bookstore on Fort Street in Victoria and found this absolute treasure in their used book section: Different Strokes Pencil Drawing by David Poxon. The book’s premise is taking a photo of a subject and having two artists draw from the photo taking you through their different drawing processes. Each artist demonstrates with step by step instructions, explaining their different methodologies. I had a blast working through some of the drawing exercises all the while learning different techniques.
Below are some of the drawings I completed using the book and the images presented by the author.

After working through quite a few of the exercises in the book, I began to work with my own photos as source material. That is where the learning really begins. Transferring what you have practised from someone else’s style to create your own.

Drawing rules!
